Year 8 πŸ™οΈ Human Geography  Urban growth, megacities, and challenges of urbanisation.

πŸ™οΈ Urban Growth

Urbanisation is the increase in the proportion of people living in urban areas.

Urbanisation in LIDCs

Rural-urban migration: pull factors (jobs, services) attract people to cities. Rapid informal growth, squatter settlements.

Squatter Settlements

Self-built housing on marginal land. Also called: favelas (Brazil), shanty towns, slums. Lack clean water, sanitation.

Counter-urbanisation

In HICs: people move from cities to rural/suburban areas. Better transport links, remote working, cost of city living.

Megacities

Over 10 million people. 2024: ~35 megacities. Mostly in Asia and Global South. Tokyo (37m), Delhi (32m).
