πŸ—ΊοΈ Reading Maps

Maps are scaled representations of the real world. Understanding them is the foundation of all geography fieldwork.

Scale

1:50,000 means 1cm on the map = 500m (0.5km) on the ground. Always check the scale bar.

Grid References

4-figure (1kmΒ² square): read ACROSS then UP. 6-figure (100m precision): add estimated 1/10 of each square.

Contour Lines

Join points of equal height. Close together = steep; far apart = gentle. The number tells you the height in metres.

Map Symbols

Always use the key (legend). Blue = water, green = woodland, brown = contours, red = main roads.

Key Formula

Real distance = map distance (cm) Γ— scale denominator Γ· 100

πŸ’‘Remember: "Along the corridor and up the stairs" for grid references β€” easting first, northing second.
