πΏ Ecosystems and Biomes
An ecosystem is a community of living organisms interacting with their physical environment.
Producers
Plants and algae use photosynthesis to convert sunlight into chemical energy β the base of all food chains.
Consumers
Primary: herbivores. Secondary: eat herbivores. Tertiary: top predators. Each level loses ~90% of energy.
Decomposers
Bacteria and fungi break down dead matter, returning nutrients to soil β completing the nutrient cycle.
Biomes
Large-scale ecosystems defined by climate: tropical rainforest, desert, savanna, taiga, tundra, temperate grassland.
