Development

Year 8 πŸ™οΈ Human Geography  Measuring development: HDI, GNI, and development indicators.

πŸ“ˆ Measuring Development

Development measures a country's standard of living and quality of life, not just wealth.

HDI

Human Development Index combines life expectancy, education (years of schooling), and income (GNI per capita). Scale 0–1.

GNI per Capita

Gross National Income per person. Economic measure only β€” doesn't show inequality or quality of life.

Social Indicators

Infant mortality rate, literacy rate, access to clean water, doctors per 1,000, life expectancy.

Limitations

Average statistics hide inequality. Shadow economy not measured. Cultural differences in what counts as "developed".

Development Gap

The gap between HIC and LIC living standards. Growing partly due to unequal trade, debt, and historical exploitation.
